Toys can pass on HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and warts. It's a good idea to use your own toys. If you do share toys however, always cover them with a condom.

Condoms stop body fluids like blood, semen and vaginal fluids from being exchanged. Make sure to put a new condom on before a new person uses your toy, and never use a vibrator from vagina to anus without putting on a new condom first. It is also a good idea to wash toys with soap and water between uses.

STIs can also be passed on through female to female sex, so lesbians should always practise safe sex by using female condoms and dams. Same with gays.

Keep your sex toys clean by wiping them with a damp, soapy cloth and letting them dry off. Any plastic attachments can be submerged in water, but don't let the part that holds the batteries get wet.

Putting a condom on vibrator will help keep it cleanest - and safest. Even using a vibrator with a condom on yourself will ensure you don't reinfect yourself - or your partner - with an infection you've had in the past.

Most people enjoy using a lubricant with their sex toys. The best lubricant to use is a water- based one, such as KY Jelly or Wet Stuff. Oil-based lubricants, such as Vaseline and baby-oil, weaken condoms and increase the risk of breakage. Water based lubricants are also the easiest to clean off sex toys.
